Hasbro Monopoly

Helping protect the world’s bestselling boardgame

Everyone knows Monopoly. Its gameboard and playing tokens are an iconic part of everyday life.

There are now hundreds of different versions for local markets and brand licences. So it’s vital to protect both the fun and the IP behind the game, with a consistent approach to creative development across all iterations.

These guidelines helped define how to design future versions of the game that would meet all the criteria.

Work

  • Tone of voice

  • Brand guidelines

  • Copywriting

The principle behind boardgames is, of course, fun. So we wanted to use the Mr Monopoly character in a lighthearted way to help guide users. He’s part of the storytelling, and demonstrates key details throughout.

This helps to retain the sense of play for designers and creatives, while simultaneously landing the messages about quality and legal implications that make the guidance so important.

It’s complete coincidence that Mr Monopoly was designed in 1936 by a man named Daniel Fox 😉
